Mechelle Bounpraseuth in ‘And Still I Rise’ at the Art Gallery of New South Wales

Chalk Horse is thrilled to announce Mechelle Bounpraseuth’s participation in And Still I Rise, an exhibition of collected works at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Named after Maya Angelou’s famous collection of poetry, And Still I Rise brings together a group of culturally diverse women artists living in Australia, many of whom are internationally recognised, if less familiar at home.

The exhibition spans generations, cultures and mediums, featuring artists Kim Ah Sam, Mia Khin Boe, Mechelle Bounpraseuth, Chun Yin Rainbow Chan, Agnes Christina, Rubaba Haider, Gillian Kayrooz, Jenna Mayilema Lee, Eugenia Lim, Kyra Mancktelow, Haji Oh, Mandy Quadrio, Monica Rani Rudhar, Marikit Santiago, Devi Seetharam, Sancintya Mohini Simpson, Shireen Taweel, Bic Tieu, Suzann Victor and Wendy Yu.

Their works – encompassing textiles, painting, metalwork, installation and video – are conceptually challenging, philosophically layered and intricately crafted. Each piece draws on lived experience and inherited memory, offering fresh perspectives on identity, history and belonging.

Drawn from the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ collection and supplemented with new commissions, And Still I Risereaches beyond established narratives to explore a multiplicity of experiences, inviting a reconsideration of contemporary Australian art.
