Kauri Hawkins spotlighted in Aotearoa Art Fair coverage
Following his commission, “From Bush to Bunnings” for the Aotearoa Art Fair in Auckland, Kauri Hawkins has been featured coverage from Te Ao Māori News and National Business Review, highlighting the central focus on indigenous Māori work and voices at this year’s fair. Hawkins spoke to both the indigenous excellence on display in this year’s fair, noting the cultural point of view and aesthetics are a “point of difference” in the art world.
The puoro pattern in the stairs represents strength and agility, and as Hawkins describes, “you literally walk through whakapapa.” His graphic iconography, inspired by kōwhaiwhai, features across this commission and his road sign work.
