In the project space Tara Marynowsky presents new watercolour works on paper that are intimate, delicate and ghostly.
Tara Marynowsky’s first solo exhibition at Chalk Horse Gods and Monsters, is inspired by her mother’s collection of Man, Myth and Magic encyclopedia magazine (c. 1970).
While some of Marynowsky’s characters relish in their ambiguity, some depict specific characters in Slavic folklore. Baba Yaga is a witch-like figure that flies around on a broomstick and eats small children, and Triglav is a god or fusion of gods in Slavic Mythology. Through her own interpretations of these curious creatures Marynowsky depicts the way different cultures create mythological beings.
A number of landscape group paintings and several intimate works capture the themes of the exhibition – spirituality, supernatural and tragicomedy. Marynowsky’s playful technique masks these powerful and mysterious themes which emerge with a longer look.
