ABOUT

Chalk Horse is a contemporary emerging arts gallery based in Surry Hills in Sydney, Australia. The gallery is run by four Directors and support staff, and works to produce an ongoing program of exhibitions and projects featuring emerging artists from Sydney, interstate and overseas.

From 2003 to 2006, the Chalk Horse directors worked with a spaceless model to produce a range of short-term and site-specific exhibitions in venues including the Museum of Sydney, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Asia-Australia Art Centre and Hoyts Cinemas, George St. They also have curated specific projects for the Chauvel Cinemas, First Draft and the Ivan Dougherty Gallery.

In 2007 Chalk Horse was opened with a view to promoting emerging art practices from local and indigenous artists as well as showing the work of artists from Asia and the United States. Chalk Horse maintains a year-round stockroom of work from these artists, and is committed to promoting Australian emerging artists internationally.

In a two-level space with three galleries, Chalk Horse presents a dynamic year-round program of challenging and experimental art practices across a range of media - from figurative painting and drawing to installation, video and performance - with an emphasis on individual exhibitions. The gallery is also host to screenings, experimental music and sound, and one-off community projects.
